SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STIs)
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), also known as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), are spread through sexual contact (vaginal, anal and oral sexual intercourse). One out of four Americans will be infected with an STI during his/her lifetime. Many STI’s have no symptoms. If left untreated, serious and permanent damage may occur.
If you think you have an STI, see your healthcare provider immediately. Call 1-800-230-PLAN (1-800-230-7526) to locate the Planned Parenthood clinic nearest you.

STIs AND THEIR CAUSES
STIs are most often caused by bacteria or viruses. Some infections may be caused by parasites, and may or may not be sexually transmitted. Some are caused by other agents.
Bacterial Infections are caused by bacteria and are often not only treatable but also curable.
Viral Infections are caused by a specific virus and remain in the body for the rest of a person’s life. While many viral infections can be treated, they cannot be cured.
