There is a dramatic change taking place in demographics in the US.  Texas is ranked third in the nation in the size of its foreign-born population (primarily Latino).  Consequently, community workers, public school professionals, public health and mental health providers are facing the challenges of involving Latino parents and providing quality services to their children.  In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to discuss how staff attitudes and values, cross-cultural differences, and different levels of acculturation impact interactions with Latino families and their children.  In addition, they will discuss strategies to provide effective health promotion and prevention education to Latino youth.

This workshop is designed for social workers, counselors, educators, nurses, youth workers and other professionals who work with Latino youth, or who can use this information in their professional or personal lives.

Socio-sexual growth and change is lifelong and can occur regardless of whether a person has an intellectual or developmental disability.  A “problematic” behavior or romantic interest of a person with intellectual and developmental disability may prompt a professional to become aware that it is time to address socio-sexual needs and desires. This workshop will allow professionals to examine factors which can influence the delivery of positive and proactive sexuality education.  Participants will learn about the natural socio-sexual needs and desires of people with intellectual and developmental disability, share professional curiosity and concerns around addressing sexuality, and experience multi-modal educational techniques.

This workshop is designed for nurses, social workers, counselors, educators and other professionals who work with youth in school and community settings.

Children will be children, but their toys are changing.  Parenting in the age of digital media requires new skills.  How are we supposed to raise kids with Facebook accounts when we still haven’t figured out how to program the VCR (correction, the DVR)?  Join Dr. Susan Sugerman in an interactive conversation about the influence of media and technology on our youth.  From email to Facebook, from texting to sexting, our children need our guidance more than ever to navigate the challenges and opportunities that our modern culture presents them.  Using a developmental context, parents, educators and other youth serving professionals alike will come away with a sense of how to empower children to protect, as well as how to recognize, potential red flags when a child may be running into trouble in cyberspace.

This workshop will explore concerns and address strategies that can be used by parents, grandparents, youth-serving professionals and other relevant adults to actively communicate with young people and to support them to develop into sexually healthy adults.

Susan Sugerman, MD, MPH, is the president and co-founder of Girls to Women Health and Wellness, a multidisciplinary medical practice in north Dallas dedicated to the physical and emotional needs of girls and young women ages 10-25.  She is a graduate of Stanford University, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas School of Public Health.  She completed residency training in Pediatrics in Cincinnati, Ohio and a Robert Wood Johnson Fellowship in Health Services Research at UCLA.  She is a recipient of the Gail Reese Award for Education from Planned Parenthood North Texas and the Women’s Mentorship Award from the Annual Women’s Symposium, Southern Methodist University.  Dr. Sugerman speaks to parent and professional audiences on subjects such as parenting, adolescent development, dating safety, sexuality, nutrition and body image, bullying and preparing for college.
