PROGRAM TOPICS AND SCHEDULING

PROGRAMS

Anatomy And Physiology introduces participants to the wonder of their own bodies. Activities may include participant groups creating models of their vision of the male and female reproductive systems out of craft materials such as play dough, pipe cleaners and balloons, and comparing them with professional models and charts. Some may participate in a game in which they answer questions, such as “How many potential eggs does a female baby have when she is born?” “How many of these eggs will mature and be released during her reproductive life?” and “What’s the most common reproductive cancer for men under the age of 35?” All students are winners in this team sport about facts and wellness.

Blood Borne Pathogens And Universal Precautions are often concerns of staff at social service and youth serving agencies. Often this comes from discomfort and lack of knowledge about the subject. This workshop explores the concerns of staff and provides information to help dispel myths and increase understanding. Group activities help keep the program light and enjoyable. Participants may also create real life scenarios in order to determine the best course of action in each situation.

Communication is a complex process and skill. Students practice interpersonal communication skills in role-plays. The focus is on developing assertive communication skills utilizing these skills to communicate decisions, and helping students prevent unintended sexual situations. Activities allow for practice of assertiveness skills in sexual decision-making.

Contraceptive Methods includes a brief history of contraception and abstinence and focuses on the methods of birth control in the United States. Male and female condoms, spermicides, diaphragm, cervical cap, hormonal contraceptives, IUD, sterilization, fertility awareness and current research into possible future methods can be included. Discussion of each method includes simulation of how it is used, effectiveness, advantages, its cost and where it can be obtained. Abstinence is portrayed as the only 100% effective method of contraception. Participants are told about their rights to confidential reproductive health care and low cost or no cost services. Resources for family planning in the community are discussed.

Health And Hygiene explores the care of female and/or male reproductive system. The program begins with reproductive anatomy and physiology. Pap smears, pelvic and breast exams, breast self-exams, speculums, circumcision, testicular exams and urologic health services are demystified. Natural reproductive functions and symptoms or common problems are presented.

HIV/AIDS knowledge, understanding and prevention skills are increased in this workshop. Participants interactively learn about HIV and AIDS, the immune system, the methods of transmission, risk behaviors, prevention methods and ways HIV impacts the community.

Human Reproduction is spectacular. Photographs taken with fiber-optic devices illustrate the process of egg and sperm production, fertilization, implantation and fetal development. Childbirth is covered toward the end of this program. This is a great opportunity for students of all ages to get answers to questions about human birth and reproduction.

Making Decisions involves a series of steps. Sometimes the process is quick and easy; other times it is labor-intensive and difficult. This program provides opportunities for participants to practice decision-making through group activities and role-play. The program stresses assertiveness communication skills as important tools for helping people express their decisions and avoid peer pressure. personal self-esteem and helping others develop self-esteem are presented. The relationship between self-esteem, decision-making and sexuality is discussed, with activities designed to show how self esteem impacts our lives.

Planned Parenthood Services include clinical family planning and reproductive health care services, sexuality education and other resources for family planning and advocacy for women’s health related issues in North Texas. Discussions include information about PPNT Health Care Centers, including full fee and sliding scale fee locations, the importance of preventative services and access to family planning services and information. Confidentiality and free or low cost services are highlighted.

Population and family planning are important issues for our local and world communities. This workshop illustrates the impact of a growing population within the classroom and globally. Infant mortality and morbidity and unmet needs for family planning in developed and developing countries are also discussed.

Puberty involves many physical and emotional changes. In this session students have the opportunity to learn about these transformations. Reproductive anatomy, hair growth, menstruation, breast development testicular development, nocturnal emissions, voice changes are reviewed. Questions from students are encouraged and answered honestly.

Relationships challenge the students to consider the quality of their own relationships. Loving relationships of many types are important throughout life and are explored in this program. Communication is an essential part of having a healthy relationship. Discussion also includes information about abusive relationships and focuses on warning signs of potential abusers and dating violence.

Risk Taking explores the potential dangers of sexual involvement. Through activities and role-plays, students are introduced to assertiveness skills, strategies for resisting peer pressure, self-esteem and consequences of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Safer Sex is about reducing sexual risks, especially the risk of unexplained pregnancy or of contracting sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Drug use, including alcohol, can be a risk by impacting sexual decision-making. Students learn how these risks can be decreased when individuals and couples make informed decisions about sexual activity and effectively express their choices. Communication skills are explored as an essential part of safer sex practices. The spectrum of safer sex practices, including abstinence, condoms and dental dams, is also discussed.

Self-Esteem is one of the most important qualities for people to develop. Tips for increasing personal self-esteem and helping others develop self-esteem are presented. The relationship between self-esteem, decision-making and sexuality is discussed, with activities designed to show how self-esteem impacts our lives.

Sex Or Sexuality investigates the differences between sex and sexuality and characterizes humans as sexual beings from birth until death. Participants have an opportunity to discuss the ways our society learns about sexuality, including media, music, family discussions and peers. Students also identify and disprove the more common myths about sexuality.

Sexual Harassment is or isn’t it? This workshop sharpens one’s assessment of questionable behaviors and comments. The program also offers definitions and insight into determining and dealing with sexual harassment.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and their impact on the reproductive system and general health are reviewed. Discussion includes transmission, symptoms, prevention measures, and resources for treatment of the most common STI’s, including chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, genital warts, herpes, trichomoniasis and HIV.

Talking With Children And Adolescents About Sex is often a daunting topic for parents and others who work with young people. Part of the discomfort often comes from the adult’s insecurity about his/her knowledge of the subject, concerns about how to start the conversation and what to say, and a fear of saying too much or too little. This workshop helps adults explore the subject and provides resources for continued learning. Among the resources highlighted is Planned Parenthood Federation’s award winning video kit “Talking About Sex- a Guide for Families.”

Teen Pregnancy has psychological, economic and social impact on the pregnant or parenting teenager, as well as the community. These issues are addressed from both the male and female perspectives. Statistics from national, state, and local perspective are used to emphasize the effect of teen pregnancy on the community. Community resources for pregnant and parenting teens accompany this topic.

Teen Sexuality examines normal developmental milestones in sexual development and the differences between sex and sexuality. It also explores the emotional and physical impact of teen sexual involvement, specifically unprotected intercourse. Participants have the opportunity to discuss the reasons teens become sexually active and identify the benefits and disadvantages of teenage sexual activity. The focus of this program is to help students identify and select healthy behaviors and forms of expression.
