Summary: This "trigger ban" would have made abortion illegal in Texas in the event that Roe v. Wade was overturned, allowing an exception only for the life of the pregnant woman. It would have created a felony offense for violating this law.
PPNT Position: Opposed—Making abortion illegal does not result in fewer abortions; instead, it results in unsafe, often deadly procedures. Rather than banning abortion, our elected officials should be working to decrease the number of unintended pregnancies through increased knowledge of and access to family planning services and education. Approximately half of all births in the U.S. each year are unintended and almost half of those end in an abortion. These bills are especially dangerous in that they do not even offer exceptions for the health of the mother or for cases of rape or incest.
