Sponsored by: Rep. Joe Deshotel (D-Port Arthur)
Summary: The legislation would have required that the state (using existing resources) create educational materials about immunization against human papillomavirus (HPV). These materials, which would have been printed in English and Spanish, would have included information about the effectiveness and availability of the vaccine, how HPV is contracted, and the connection of HPV to cervical cancer. The bil also required these materials to inform women of the continuing need to receive Pap smears, even if they received the HPV vaccine.
PPNT Position: Supported—The HPV vaccine was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration and was shown in clinical trials to be 100% effective in preventing infection with HPV strains 16 and 18, which together account for 70% of cervical cancer cases. Educating the public about HPV immunization could have drastically decreased the number of women who contract these HPV strains and later develop cervical cancer.
