Summary: The Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act of 2007 would prohibit federal Medicaid and Medicare funds from being provided to a hospital unless the hospital provides a survivor of sexual assault with accurate and unbiased information about emergency contraception (EC), offers the woman EC, provides it at the hospital upon her request, and does not deny the woman these services because of her inability to pay.
PPNT Position: Support—Survivors of sexual assault deserve to be treated with respect and offered all possible options to avoid the additional trauma of an unintended pregnancy. Making hospitals' federal funding dependent on their provision of EC to sexual assault providers will ensure that more hospitals give women in this situation the option to protect themselves from an unintended pregnancy.
