HOW DO I...
A GUIDE TO MAKING A PHONE CALL TO YOUR ELECTED OFFICIAL
Phone calls are an important method of communicating with elected officials because they offer constituents the unique opportunity to receive immediate feedback. The following are some general guidelines to follow when phoning elected officials.
- Be concise – Your message will be more powerful if you are brief and address only one issue.
- Compose a short passage before your call – This will help you to portray a clear message. Keep in mind that the person answering the phone may not be familiar with the issue you are addressing. Be sure to include the number of any bill.
- Often you will be asked to leave a message – It is important to leave pertinent information such as your name and address, the bill number pertaining to the issue you are addressing, and how you would like the official to vote.
- Always ask for a response – This holds your elected officials accountable to you.
