Procedure and Recovery Room Nurse


Reports to: Surgical Services Clinic Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Procedure Room

    1. Ensure that any client who requests an abortion is aware that she may change her decision at any time and will be provided with alternatives and will receive accurate information and appropriate referrals.
    2. Start and monitor IV’s and give medication through IV.
    3. Assist physician in the procedure room. Assist in all aspects of abortion procedure, including performing vital signs and lab work, assisting physician during procedure while being supportive of client, and assisting in recovery room as indicated.
    4. Notify physician of any medical problem or other special concerns of client that may relate to the abortion or choice of birth control method.
    5. Set-up and clean-up exam rooms.
    6. Proficient in performing ultrasound for gestational sizing. (training will be provided).
    7. Dispense medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician.
    8. At the end of each procedure day, secure all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage.  Maintain accurate inventory of all drugs used in the procedure room.

    Recovery Room

    1. Monitor clients in the post-abortion recovery room and supervise the recovery area.
    2. Dispense medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician.
    3. Review post-abortion aftercare instructions with client.
    4. Administer Rhogam to Rh negative patients and discuss scant tissue follow-up as indicated.
    5. Review birth control information and assess contraindications and risks to OC.
    6. Notify client of need for post-abortion follow-up.
    7. Maintain client statistics to be given to on-call staff.
    8. Maintain accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room.

    Additional Responsibilities

    1. Assist with emergencies.
    2. View services through the clients’ eyes and use your best judgment to serve clients promptly, competently, and in a friendly manner.
    3. Follow protocols and policies.  Give client accurate information and answer questions regarding the abortion procedure, possible complications, follow-up exams, and birth control options.  Treat complaints as opportunities to improve service.
    4. Maintain professional image through dress and action.
    5. Handle communication problems with other staff and managers directly, constructively, and with sensitivity.
    6. Through meetings and discussions, help develop ideas for improving services.
    7. Attend staff meeting regularly.
    8. Assist the Abortion Manager as requested and perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

    •  Must be licensed in the state of Texas as a registered or licensed vocational nurse.
    • Must have and maintain CPR certification.  
    • Experience working in reproductive health setting preferred.
    • Ability to work calmly, efficiently, and quickly.
    • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
    • Commitment to goals and ideals of Planned Parenthood.
